Hi, I'm Joseph Wallace. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the son of two doctors. As soon as I discovered that I had no aptitude for medicine myself, I decided that I wanted to be a wssmallrotate writer. Even more importantly, I wanted to be a writer who traveled-who visited remote regions far from New York City and came back to tell about it. I needed to see what the far corners of the world looked like: African savannas, the mountains of New Guinea, tropical rainforests. And then I needed to find out if my writing ability allowed me to capture some of the beauty and mystery of those untamed corners of our ever-shrinking world.

These were my dreams as a child, and I've been lucky enough to live them. As a writer, and just for the fun of it, I've gotten to visit Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Papua New Guinea, and many other lands. smbaseball And, yes, I've had as many adventures as I could have wished for, and more. You can read about some of my hair-raising experiences in The Haunted John and Other Stories on this site.

While traveling, I've gained a new respect for the explorers who visited far-off places in years past, during far riskier and adventurous times. In my new picture book for children, BIG AND NOISY SIMON, I send my hero off to Africa, just as I did as a kid. My new book, A Gathering of Wonders, describes the fascinating (and often life-threatening) efforts by the researchers at New York's great The Haunted John and Other Stories American Museum of Natural History as they hunt for dinosaurs in the Gobi Desert, fight to save the mountain gorilla in the shadow of Africa's Mountains of the Moon, and trek through the Andes in search of the last vestiges of Inca civilization. And all without cell phones or the Weather Channel!

I've never lost one part of my New York upbringing: A love of baseball, and especially baseball history. I went to my first game in 1964, at Shea Stadium, and a highlight of my life will always be the Amazin' Mets' unlikely 1969 World Series championship. That spectacular Series is just one of a century's-worth of Fall Classics that I describe and discuss in my new baseball book, WORLD SERIES: An Opinionated Chronicle. I think my love of the game and its past also shows through in my other baseball books (THE BASEBALL ANTHOLOGY, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BASEBALL).autobio

Today, I live north of New York City with my family, not far from where I grew up. (Yankee country.) I'm still an avid baseball fan, and I still love to travel - Panama was a recent destination. I'll fill you in about my latest adventures as soon as I can.gathering

Thanks! Maybe I'll see you at the game or on the road.
